Carers

Woman with elderly couple

We recognise the valuable contribution family carers make in supporting vulnerable people, thus enabling them to remain in their own homes.

What is a family carer?

You may not think of yourself as a carer, but anybody who provides or intends to provide substantial care on a regular basis 'to a family member, friend or neighbour' on an unpaid basis (apart from if you are receiving carers allowance), is a family carer.

Carers assessment

If you are a family carer then you are entitled to a 'carers assessment'. This is an assessment of your needs and will enable you to identify the support you need in order to continue in your caring role.

There are a number of ways we offer support to family carers to ensure that they are able to look after their own health and wellbeing. Support can include

  • financial support (carers direct payment)
  • access to training
  • respite care
  • leisure opportunities
  • returning to, or remaining in work
