Mike has over 30 years’ experience in local authority building control. Prior to rejoining us in 2018, Mike's previous employers included Tauranga City Council (New Zealand), Shropshire Council, North Shropshire District Council and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council in Kent. Before entering building control, Mike worked as site engineer and estimator for Tilbury Construction in Kent.

"Working in New Zealand (NZ) building control gave me an insight into construction methods not commonly seen in the UK, for instance single skin timber frame, and the use of sprinklers in both domestic and commercial buildings.

The experience of NZ building control systems demonstrated the need for professionally qualified and competent building control surveyors - the competency of surveyors is constantly assessed in NZ. Following the Grenfell Tower fire in London, and the subsequent review of building control by Dame Judith Hackett, the model used in NZ is being adopted by the UK building control system."

Since returning to the UK and Shropshire Council Mike has attained a level 6 fire safety specialist qualification with the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) - this covers all buildings in the UK. This qualification is part of the review of building control, and the level 6 is currently the top qualification in the UK.

Mike is a corporate member of The Chartered Association of Building Engineers and also the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Mike enjoys walking in the hills of the UK, photography, cycling and travel.
