Parents and carers can request a formal statutory assessment for their child to consider whether a statement of special educational needs (SEN) may be necessary. The local authority normally has six-weeks, based upon the evidence given, to decide whether to initiate such an assessment.
You can request an assessment by writing to us (our address is in the contact box on this page). The Parent Partnership Service is available to help with this (see link). It is usual practice to talk to your child's teacher or the school's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) before contacting the local authority.
It is also helpful if parents are clear about why they want the assessment and supply any information about any help the child already receives, together with any information which they have from professionals who may have already been involved in helping your child.
We are always happy to discuss any requests for assessment. Please call us for an informal conversation if you require further information.
