Management of actual or potential aggression

MAPA - Management of Actual or Potential Aggression - is about keeping people safe - whether in the context of staff caring for people safely, or managing difficult situations. The MAPA model is owned by Positive Options and was selected for use as it fits our local priorities both in terms of values and effectiveness.
The Purpose
This area of work seeks to provide both policy and training in an extremely inclusive way, accessible to all services within Shropshire, and Telford and Wrekin, covering both statutory and independent sector services. The aim is raise the quality and consistency of care offered by providing clear guidance and training that promote an ethical, value-based and consistent approach to supporting people safely. The promotion of the MAPA policy and training will have a positive impact on the safety and confidence of both service users and staff.
Scope
To date, MAPA has focussed on all learning disability services across the county. This has now been extended to childrens' residential services in Telford and Wrekin, and is now being offered to services for older people and physical disability in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.
Policy
The local multi-agency adult learning disability policy was developed in 2003 following the joint guidance on restrictive physical interventions published in 2002. The local policy now called the MAPA Policy was revised in 2007 and will continue to be revised every three years. You can download a copy of the policy from this page.
Training
MAPA training is delivered by a team of licensed trainers employed by various independent and statutory services across the county. The trainers have a good understanding of local need, and are also available if specific advice and support is needed over and above training provision. Services wishing to access the training will need to complete a risk assessment, this form together with the training protocol can be downloaded from this page. We are now a BILD approved training centre (British Institute of Learning Disabilities).
We are very grateful to Taking Part who have worked with us to develop a brief, accessible version of the policy which you can download from this page.
