Recycling small electrical items

Electrical appliances

Every year we each throw away three electrical items on average. You can recycle any small electrical items at the five main household recycling centres (HRCs) in Shropshire.

What type of electrical items will you accept?

We can recycle anything which needs electricity to operate - as a simple rule of thumb that's 'anything with a battery or a plug', including:

  • irons
  • kettles
  • toasters
  • electric shavers
  • hair straighteners
  • mobile phones
  • cameras
  • radios
  • electric tooth brushes
  • blenders
  • computer game consoles
  • power tools
  • hair dryers
  • coffee machines

What happens to the electrical items?

The electrical items get sent to EMR in Wolverhampton for recycling. They are hand sorted before being stripped down to remove any metals or other recyclable materials.

Why recycle electrical items?

Recycling electrical waste keeps it out of landfill. This is especially important with electricals because many items contain rare and precious metals. It also helps to reduce the need for more materials to be mined, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
