Shropshire Council

Crime prevention

What we do

The Crime Prevention Unit is based in Property Services, and our work ensures our adherence to the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, Section 17. We cover all council premises, property and staff. We also advise on proactive security, crime prevention and personal safety, and assist in addressing any problems with anti-social behaviour, theft, burglary and staff safety.

We have considerable knowledge and experience, and are able to advise on design, managerial and technical options/solutions in respect of security and safety. When helping to resolve issues, the aim is to address real problems rather than perceived ones.

We work and liaise with our partners in Children and Young People Services, the Heath and Safety Unit, Risk Management, West Mercia Police, Property Services and the technical support specialists.

'Secured by Design'

As the design and construction of the built environment influences quality of life, we encourage the use of ‘Secured by Design’, a national policy from the Association of Chief Police Officers. The principles of Secured by Design are to create safer environments and establish a standard of security. Secured by Design should be considered and implemented in building maintenance, improvements, extensions and new build.

Safer School scheme

We promote and assist Shropshire schools with the ‘Safer School’ scheme. This is not the traditional approach to reviewing school security/safety. It's a scheme that sets a minimum standard in security/safety, and it involves an accreditation. Following the accreditation, schools continue to work on the scheme so as to maintain the standard. The majority of Shropshire schools are involved in the scheme.
