Autism in Young People, Trauma and Life Transitioning

Aims to: To gain understanding of the different aspects of transitioning through life and the potential implications of trauma for the autistic person – Supporting the Governments “National Strategy for autistic children, young people & adults: 2021 – 2026”

Learning objectives:

  • Explore autism, including sensory processing differences and co-occurring conditions
  • Consider definitions of trauma
  • Discuss childhood, puberty and transition times, including how trauma may affect the individual
  • Explore experiential functioning/thinking
  • Explore masking, camouflaging and stimming
  • Examine strategies for emotional regulation
  • Discuss how to support the young person to gain control, enhance resilience and develop coping mechanisms using person centred approaches
