Shropshire's Great Outdoors Strategy Board

Inspiring action on countryside access and enjoyment of the great outdoors

The Shropshire’s Great Outdoors Strategy Board is a development of, and acts as, the Local Access Forum for Shropshire. It advises Shropshire Council, Natural England and others on how to better inspire action to access and enjoy the outdoors. The members have a wide variety of backgrounds and interests including walking, cycling, riding, disabled access, 4x4s or other outdoor activities, are land owners with access across their land, or involved with landowners, or are at the forefront of economic development in the countryside, preventative health and wellbeing or the environment.

The board meets several times a year with the aim of making outdoor recreation in Shropshire more financially independent, strategically important and action driven, whilst taking into account the needs of land management and nature conservation. The meetings are open to the public and are usually held at Shirehall in Shrewsbury. Members act in a voluntary capacity, although travel expenses can be covered.

Vacancies on the board

We're currently recruiting to the board, and to enable us to maintain a reasonable balance between the interest groups, applications are sought from people who are influential in one, or more, of the following areas:

  • Owners or occupiers of land over which local rights of way exist or that is accessible to the public
  • Users of local rights of way, publicly owned green space and access land who enjoy Shropshire’s great outdoors
  • Any other interests relevant to the area, which could include: nature or land conservation, heritage, health and wellbeing, the visitor economy and outdoor activities, local community or minority interests
