Supported Internships - Sian’s Story

Enable logoFind out how a supported internship helped Sian to gain confidence and experience in a work setting.

If someone asked me if I would recommend supported internships and an apprenticeship, I would definitely say 100% yes! The other things that have been helpful have been Enable, my manager/colleagues, college tutor and family.”

Through Enable Supported Employment Services, Sian completed her Supported Internship, at Measbrook Care Home, working alongside Sarah and Shirley who helped her to build her skills and experience in the role. Shirley Dwyer, Maesbrook Manager had this to say about Sian during her Supported Internship,

“She is a bright and enthusiastic member of the team who is well liked by the team and the residents. We look forward to her continuing to develop under the guidance of the team and from her Job Coach Jeremy Yarnell Davies who has echoed how well Sian adapts to the various roles asked of her. He can see her growing in confidence and independence week by week.”

Sian had the opportunity to work closely with all of the teams at Maesbrook, alongside her routine jobs, helping her to gradually build up her confidence with every shift. Her work experience consisted of 2 days a week from 10:00am – 3:00pm. With the support of her Job Coach, Sian was able to do the busy tea run in the morning – not only good work experience but a fantastic way for her to build relationships with the residents of Maesbrook.

Following on from her supported internship and college education, Sian now has a paid position 3 and 4 days a week (alternate weeks) from 10:00am to 4:00pm and even does extra hours to help the team when staff levels are low.

“Since studying at Shrewsbury College (Health and Social Care and supported internship) I have a job which I wasn’t expecting, I feel more independent and I am not as shy and petrified as I used to be, so my confidence has really improved.”
