Declare a Climate Emergency!
There is now an overwhelming scientific consensus that we are facing catastrophic climate breakdown if we do not take rapid and far-reaching action. In December 2018, David Attenborough said: "Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale. Our greatest threat in thousands of years. Climate change. If we don't take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon."
Also in the autumn, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said: "If we do not change course by 2020, we risk missing the point where we can avoid runaway climate change, with disastrous consequences for people and all the natural systems that sustain us."
It's vital that local councils take responsible leadership roles, doing all they can to protect local and global communities and ecosystems - by publicly declaring that we are in an emergency situation, by taking swift and bold action to reverse damaging policies and agreeing a plan to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025.
