What is it?

The Type and Affordability of Housing Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)
is relevant to all types of residential development. It supplements a number of Core Strategy policies, providing detailed guidance to assist in implementing those policies in a consistent manner across Shropshire. The SPD helps to provide a mix of good quality, sustainable housing development of the right size, type, tenure and affordability to meet the housing needs and aspirations of all sections of the community.

Key elements of the SPD are:

• All new market housing developments are required by the Shropshire Core Strategy to make a contribution towards the provision of affordable housing.
• The prevailing target rate for affordable housing contributions for the period 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013 is 13% as resolved by Shropshire Council's cabinet at its meeting on 4th July 2012.
• The Shropshire “build your own affordable home” scheme is included in Chapter 5 of the SPD.
