Employment by industry
More Shropshire residents are employed in the wholesale and retail sector (which includes motor vehicle repair) than in any other industry sector. 16.1% of all Shropshire residents who had worked in the week before the census were employed in this sector. Human health and social work activities account for the second highest share at 13.7%. Manufacturing and education each account for around a tenth of Shropshire workers.
Men account for a higher proportion of people working in most industries, with mining and quarrying; electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply; construction; and transport and storage particularly male dominated. Human health, social work activities and education are the most female-dominated sectors.
