Archaeology

Shropshire has a rich and varied wealth of historic monuments and archaeological sites, dating from prehistoric times to the Industrial Revolution. These range from the spectacular and well known sites, such as the county’s hillforts, the Roman town of Wroxeter, the many castles of the Marches and the industrial heritage of the Ironbridge Gorge, to those for which little above-ground trace survives.

Archaeological research is a continuous process with new sites regularly identified, as well as new research being conducted into those already known about.

This unique archaeological heritage is an important cultural resource, and one which we want to protect and enhance for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
