Unemployment in Shropshire
The 2011 census results showed that:
- The rate of unemployment in Shropshire was slightly lower than the England and Wales average (3.3% in 2011)
- The unemployment rate rose significantly in accordance with the economic downturn. The number unemployed rose by almost 50% between 2001 and 2011.The number of unemployed men and women rose at a similar rate, but men were still more likely to be unemployed than women
- There was a sharp rise in the number of long-term unemployed, and the number of people who have never worked had doubled since the time of the last census
