What is CIL?
The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a charge on new development within Shropshire. CIL is a planning charge introduced across England and Wales by the Community Infrastructure Levy Regulations 2010 (as amended) and is used to help fund local infrastructure that is needed as a result of development.
Shropshire Council was one of the first authorities to introduce a CIL Charging Schedule. The CIL Charging Schedule was adopted on 24 November 2011 and came into effect on 01 January 2012. It applies to all eligible development approved after this date.
The rates within the CIL Charging Schedule were informed by an economic viability assessment and consultation with the general public and the development industry. The CIL Charging Schedule was also subject to examination by an independent inspector from the Planning Inspectorate.
