Bridgnorth bypass improvement works
This information is correct at the time of publishing but could be subject to change either due to circumstances beyond our control, or should other works come in that make it more efficient and less disruptive to reschedule
Closure details
- Starts: 11 July 2017
- Ends: 31 October 2017
- Running: Daytime
- South Shropshire
Significant improvement works are to be carried out between July and November 2017 on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout. The work is the first significant maintenance carried out to the road since it was built. It’s necessary in order to repair and replace infrastructure that has reached the end of its life.
The bypass project will see the replacement of bridge expansion joints on the Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge, along with associated concrete repairs to the bridge and works on the bridge parapets. The Severn Valley Railway Overbridge will also be repainted. The A458 and the roundabout approaches will be resurfaced, road signs and road markings will be replaced and refreshed, and footpaths will be repaired. The street lighting and safety barriers will also be updated, and drainage improvements will be carried out.
Work is due to start on 11 July and finish by 10 November.
Our contractor will begin with works to the Bridgnorth River Severn bridge and on the Stourbridge Road and Kidderminster Road roundabouts. Works to the bridge will take place beneath the structure, however two-way traffic signals will be in place from 11 July on the B4555 ‘The Cankhorn’ to allow safe access to the bridge abutment for the contractor to erect scaffolding. It’s intended that the signals remain in place until 14 July.
At the same time, works to both roundabouts will begin, with four-way traffic signals in place at different times to enable the contractor to carry out excavation in a safe manner. Only one roundabout will be under traffic signals at any one time, and this work will last two to three weeks.
Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained while work is carried out.
Once work starts, fortnightly updates will be added to this page. Find out more about the resurfacing work we're carrying out from our Newsroom.
Updates
20 July 2017
Improvement works on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass started on Tuesday 11 July 2017.
The work on the A458 and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout are due to finish by 10 November.
A 20mph temporary speed limit has been placed on the works extents for the duration of the scheme. This speed reduction is in place to protect both the contractors workforce, but also to give added safety to the motoring public.
Since 11 July Shropshire Council’s contractors have been working on the Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge and on the Stourbridge Road and Kidderminster Road Roundabouts. These works will continue for the next two weeks.
Works to the bridge are ongoing, concrete testing is currently being carried out on the bridge deck from the underside of the bridge, however works to the bridge parapets on the topside of the bridge will begin requiring two way traffic signals to be in place from 24 July for approx one week.
Concurrently work will continue to both roundabouts. Traffic Management will be in place on the roundabouts at different times to enable the contractor to carry out excavation in a safe manner. Only one roundabout will be under traffic signals at any one time and works will be phased to avoid the signals on Bridgnorth Bridge. This work will last another 2 weeks.
Looking further ahead at road closure dates, it is intended that a series of weekday, but night time closures will be in place from 4 September, extending well into October to enable the resurfacing works and bridge deck joint replacement works.
Final resurfacing of the Ludlow Road and Kidderminster Road roundabouts require 24 hour road closures where half of each roundabout will be closed to enable curing of the surfacing material. These are currently planned for mid September.
It is intended that this blog is updated weekly with a fortnightly ‘look ahead’ of the works so as to provide as accurate and up to date information as possible.
Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained while work is carried out.
2 August 2017
The work on the A458 and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout are due to finish by 10 November.
For the past fortnight Shropshire Council’s contractors have been working on the Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge and on the Stourbridge Road and Kidderminster Road Roundabouts. These works will continue for the next two weeks.
Works to the bridge are ongoing, concrete testing has been carried out on the bridge deck. Works to the bridge parapets on the topside of the bridge will begin requiring two way traffic signals to be in place at different times beginning week commencing 7 August.
Work to enable new street lighting is currently focused on the Stourbridge Road Roundabout, as this work is completed the works will move onto the Kidderminster road roundabout during the middle of week commencing 7 August. At times 4 way lights will be necessary on each roundabout, however only one roundabout will be under traffic signals at any one time and works will be phased to avoid the signals on Bridgnorth Bridge. This work will continue for the next 2 weeks.
These are currently planned for midweek days during mid-September. Further and more specific details will be released nearer the time when dates are more firmly programmed.
A 20mph temporary speed limit has been placed on the works extents for the duration of the scheme. This speed reduction is in place to protect both the contractors workforce, but also to give added safety to the motoring public.
18 August 2017
The works on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass are all still on course to finish on 10 November.
Over the last fortnight Shropshire Council’s contractors have been carrying out work for the new streetlighting system. The work has been carried out around the Ludlow roundabout (A458/B4364), Wenlock Road junction and Kidderminster Roundabout (A458/A442). Removal and replacement of gully gratings and frames ready for the resurfacing works also took place on Kidderminster Roundabout and A458. On the A458 between the Ludlow and Kidderminster roundabouts the vehicle restraints barriers were removed. All these works will continue into next week.
To accommodate these works it was necessary to have four-way lights on the roundabout, which in turn created possible delays for commuters for which we apologise. Four-way lights on the roundabouts will have to be implemented again in the coming weeks to allow works to be completed safely. In advance of this we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding that these works need to be carried out.

Over the last week our contractors have been carrying out work for the new street lighting system. This work was been carried out around the Wenlock Road junction. The removal and replacement of gully gratings and frames ready for the resurfacing works took place along the A458 between Ludlow roundabout and Kidderminster roundabout. Within this section of road the vehicle restraints barriers were removed and a new one erected. All these works will continue into next week.
Next week the street lighting work will take place on the Kidderminster roundabout. To accommodate these works it will be necessary to have four-way lights on the roundabout, which could create delays for commuters. In advance of this we would like to thank you for patience and understanding that these works need to be carried out.

Improvement work on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass continues.
The work on the A458 and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout remain due to finish by 10 November.
Works to the safety barriers, street lighting and drainage over the entire site have been ongoing. These works will continue into the beginning of October during midweek daytime hours. This will involve further periods where both the Ludlow Road Roundabout, the Kidderminster Road Roundabout and the Wenlock Road Junction will be controlled under traffic signals. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause.
Resurfacing of the Ludlow Road and Kidderminster Road roundabouts began on 15 September and will continue with 24 hour road closures between 6am on Monday 18 and 6am on Thursday 21 September. More specific details about what is closed and when can be found below. 24 hour closures are required to allow the surfacing material sufficient time to be installed and cured before it carries traffic, this is to ensure long-term durability. It is expected that these closures will cause significant delays throughout the days, but particularly at peak times. We apologise for this. We advise motorists to seek alternative routes where possible.
So as to minimise future delays to motorists, collaborative working has enabled the Severn Valley Railway, and Shropshire Council's consultant WSP to carry out maintenance works, and bridge inspection works respectively within the closures planned for the bypass works. These will coincide with the 24 hour closure planned for the 18/19 September.
Taking advantage of the midweek night time closures on the A458 over the last week the works to the deck joints on Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge are progressing well. Regular night time closures are booked to end on the evening of 26 September / morning of 27 September though it is hoped that not all of these will be utilised. During the daytime traffic signals will be in place with one lane closed at all times. Further night time closures are identified for specific activities into October and these will be advised in due course.
All night time road closures will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am. Local diversions will be in place and signed at all times.

22 September 2017
The work on the A458 and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout remain due to finish by 10 November.
Works to the safety barriers, street lighting and drainage over the entire site have been ongoing. These works will continue until November during midweek daytime hours. This will involve further periods where both the Ludlow Road Roundabout, the Kidderminster Road Roundabout and the Wenlock Road Junction will be controlled under traffic signals. These signals are being manually controlled at peak times. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause.
Resurfacing of the Ludlow Road and Kidderminster Road roundabouts began on 15 September and ended on 21 September with 24 hour road closures. The strategy for these works was to use a material that will be durable in the long term, thereby minimising the maintenance and thus disruption to the public during the life of the materials. The 24 hour closures were required to allow the surfacing material sufficient time to be installed and cured before it carries traffic. We apologise for the delays caused.
The collaborative working with the Severn Valley Railway, and Shropshire Council’s consultant WSP to carry out maintenance works, and bridge inspection works respectively within the closures above has resulted so far in four days of traffic disruption saving, These works would otherwise have occurred at a different time of year. Further works are planned to be incorporated into later Bridgnorth Bypass scheme closures, saving further disruption.
Taking advantage of the midweek night time closures on the A458 over the last week the works to the deck joints on Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge have progressed well. The first half of the bridge deck joint on the westbound carriageway have now been installed. Works are now focused onto the east bound carriageway joint, before the surfacing can be completed. Regular night time closures on the bypass and over the bridge are booked to end on the morning of 27 September though it is hoped that not all of these will be utilised. Traffic signals will be in place with one lane closed at all times when closures are not in place.
By progressing the works 24 hours a day during the midweek period, it is felt that the inconvenience to the general public is minimised by keeping the duration of the works to the minimum. We appreciate that at times works are noisy, some noise is inevitable and cannot be avoided. For this we apologise.
Additional night time road closures are planned in mid and late October for the installation of the eastbound lane bridge deck joint, the final resurfacing , further bridge inspection works and the SVR bridge painting. This will include a further long closure of the bypass which will include daytime hours. A number of improvements to the traffic management and signage layout have been identified and will be implemented for long closures of the bypass, which will occur between 8pm on Tuesday 25 October and 6am on Thursday 26 October. This includes programming the closure to coincide with the school half-term holidays. Whilst it is expected these improvements will assist in minimising delays, long delays are however again expected, particularly during peak times.

6 October 2017
The work on the A458 and the roundabout approaches between the A458/B4373 (Wenlock Road) junction and the Stourbridge Road roundabout remain due to finish by 10 November.
Works to the safety barriers, street lighting and drainage over the entire site have been ongoing. These works will continue until November during midweek daytime hours. These signals are being manually controlled at peak times. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause.
The deck joints on Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge have progressed well. The 1st half of the bridge deck joint on the westbound carriageway has been installed and the second half should be in place today (6 October). Works are now focused onto completing this half of the bridge joint before the surfacing can be completed. Traffic signals will be in place with one lane closed at all times however work progresses during the evenings. The condition of the concrete on the ends of the bridge deck were found to be far worse than expected and had resulted in significant extra works. However the delays caused have been minimised and it is not believed at this stage that this will impact on the finish date advertised above.
Night time road closures are planned in mid and late October for the installation of the eastbound lane bridge deck joint, the final resurfacing , further bridge inspection works and the SVR bridge painting. This will include a further long closure of the bypass which will include daytime hours. A number of improvements to the traffic management and signage layout have been identified and will be implemented for long closures of the bypass, which will occur between 8pm on Tuesday 24 October and 6am on Thursday 26 October. This includes programming the closure to coincide with the school half term holidays. Whilst it is expected these improvements will assist in minimising delays, long delays are however again expected, particularly during peak times.
On the evening of 6 November, the A458 link between the Kidderminster Road Roundabout and the Stourbridge Road Roundabout will be closed overnight for repairs to the existing surfacing. This will be a single night closure between 8pm on Monday 6 November and 6am on Tuesday 7 November
By progressing the works 24 hours a day during the midweek period, it is felt that the inconvenience to the general public is minimised by keeping the duration of the works to the minimum. We appreciate that at times works are noisy, some noise is inevitable and cannot be avoided. For this we apologise.

A local diversion via the Old Stourbridge Road will be in place. for all traffic.
16 October 2017
Works to the safety barriers, street lighting and drainage over the entire site have been ongoing. These works will continue until November during midweek daytime hours. This will involve further periods where both the Ludlow Road Roundabout, the Kidderminster Road Roundabout and the Wenlock Road Junction will be controlled under traffic signals at various times. These signals are being manually controlled at peak times. When the Kidderminster road roundabout is controlled by traffic signals, the B4363/Underhill Street/Hollybush Road junction will also be controlled by traffic signals in order to minimise the delays at this junction. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause.
The deck joints on Bridgnorth River Severn Bridge have progressed well. Works are now focused onto completing the surfacing over the bridge in advance of the last joint works. Some concrete repairs remain to be carried out to the bridge underside and these will continue into the late part of October. Traffic signals which have been a feature the last fortnight will remain in place until this work is complete.
Night time road closures are planned in late October for the final completion of the bridge deck joint rubbers and nosings , further bridge inspection works and the Severn Valley Railway bridge painting. Additional advance warning signage, controlling the B4363/Underhill Street/Hollybush Road junction with manual Stop/Go boards, and turning off the pedestrian crossing on Bridgnorth (Old) Bridge to assist with the flow of traffic through and into town. Whilst it is expected these improvements will assist in minimising delays, long delays are however again expected, particularly during peak times. It is advised that motorists should seek alternative routes if possible, or allow additional journey times. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause.
On the evening of 6 November, the A458 link between the Kidderminster Road Roundabout and the Stourbridge Road Roundabout will be closed overnight for repairs to the existing surfacing. This will be a single night closure between 8pm on Monday 6 November and 6am on Tuesday 7 November.
Whilst the original programme of works remains on target to be completed by 10 November, the completion date will be delayed. As works has progressed it has been identified that the surfacing of the Stourbridge Road roundabout has deteriorated significantly more than anticipated. The decision has therefore been made to resurface the roundabout. It is planned that a series of two consecutive night time, and two consecutive 24hour road closures are put in place preventing access/egress from the Old Stourbridge Road, and the Old Worcester Road onto the roundabout to allow for these works to take place. These will begin with a closure between 8pm Monday 13 November and 6am on Tuesday 14 November, continuing with a closure beginning on 8pm on Tuesday 14 November and ending on 6am Friday 17 November. The main A458 through route will be open at all times controlled by traffic signals.
It is recognised that this works will cause further disruption and delays to traffic throughout the day and especially during peak hours. However these works are considered essential to maintain the long term durability of the surfacing at this location. Should these works not be carried out at this time, it is likely that an additional scheme to resurface the roundabout would be required within the near future. Delays are expected during the daytime and particularly during peak times. It is advised that motorists should seek alternative routes if possible, or allow additional journey times. We apologise in advance with respect to the delays these works will cause. Specific advance signage will appear in due course to warn motorists of these additional works. A letter drop to inform residents in the immediate area, and local businesses effected will be carried out week commencing 16 October. It has already been identified that HGV access into and out of the Old Worcester road will present a challenge, we are already in discussions with interested parties.

20 October 2017
Improvement works on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass continue.
The surfacing over the bridge is now complete, and this allows the topside bridge deck joint works to be completed. Some concrete repairs remain to be carried out to the bridge underside and both these activities will continue during week commencing 23 October. Traffic signals will be in place at times.
Further road closures are planned in late October for the final completion of the bridge deck joint rubbers and nosings , further bridge inspection works and the SVR bridge painting. This will include a further long closure of the bypass which will include daytime hours. These are planned for the following dates and times:- Between 8pm on Monday 23 October and 6am on Tuesday 24 October (an overnight closure). Also between 8pm Tuesday 24 October and 6am on Thursday 26th October (a 34-hour closure). A number of improvements to the traffic management and signage layout have been identified and will be implemented for the 34 hour closure of the bypass which will occur. This Includes programming the closure to coincide with the school half term holidays.
Whilst the original programme of works remains on target to be completed by 10th November, the completion date will be delayed. As works has progressed it has been identified that the surfacing of the Stourbridge Road roundabout has deteriorated significantly more than anticipated. The decision has therefore been made to resurface the roundabout. It is planned that a series of two consecutive night time, and two consecutive 24-hour road closures are put in place preventing access/egress from the Old Stourbridge Road, and the Old Worcester Road onto the roundabout to allow for these works to take place. These will begin with a closure between 8pm on Monday 13 November and 6am on Tuesday 14 November, continuing with a closure beginning on 8pm on Tuesday 14 November and ending on 6am Friday 17 November.

Improvement works on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass are set to be substantially complete on 21 November. At present the contractor is completing the last of the programmed works, with works in progress on powering up the streetlights, the vehicle restraint system, gully cleaning and the white lining. The additional resurfacing works on the Stourbridge Road Roundabout is also still in progress, with white lining the final activity. These works should be completed by Tuesday 21 November. However any remedial works identified as the activities above are completed may mean that some minor site works will occur until Friday 24 November, when the contractor is planning to have fully demobilised.
In October, we decided to replace the parapet mesh panels on the River Severn Bridge. These are on order, however the lead-in time on these items meant that it has not been possible to install these at the same time as the remaining site works. The present panels are serviceable and safe in the meantime.
Once these panels become available the contractor will remobilise a small team to install these at a future date to be confirmed. To minimise disruption to traffic it is planned that this work will occur overnight between 8pm and 6am (weekdays) using two-way traffic signals on the bridge over a ten night period. These works will be advertised using advance warning signs located on each approach to the bridge in due course.
As the scheme is nearing its end, this will be the final update you'll receive on the project.
