Local elections 2025
Local elections will be held in the Shropshire Council area on Thursday 1 May 2025 – to elect councillors for Shropshire Council and for town/parish councils in the Shropshire Council area.
Elections will only be held for seat/councils that are contested.
Here’s everything you need to know about voting in the election.
Boundary changes
Boundary changes will be in effect for the Shropshire Council elections.
- There will be 23 newly-named divisions
- There will be 74 councillors in 72 divisions (two divisions have two councillors)
Some boundary changes will also be in effect for the town/parish council elections.
Want to stand for election?
The deadline for receipt of nominations is 4pm on 2 April.

Verification and counting of votes
Will take place at Shrewsbury Sports Village on Friday 2 May and Saturday 3 May (only authorised attendees are allowed access).
Poll cards
Will be posted to registered voters from 14 March.
Polling stations
Will be open from 7am to 10pm on 1 May

Candidates
Lists of candidates (also called statement of persons nominated) will be added to this page by 4pm on 3 April
Registering to vote
To vote in this election you must be registered to vote. If you’re not already, the deadline for registering to vote is midnight on Friday 11 April.
Voter ID
To vote at a polling station you’ll need an accepted form of photo ID. Voters will need to show original documents, copies or duplicates are not accepted.
To see what ID is accepted – and to apply for free ID (known as a Voter Authority Certificate) go to the electoral commission website.
The deadline to apply for a VAC is 5pm on 23 April, but please apply as soon as you can.
Postal votes
The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 5pm on 14 April.
You can apply for a postal vote online or by post. You’ll need to prove your identity when applying. You need to reapply for a postal vote every three years.
If you take your completed postal vote pack to Guildhall in Shrewsbury or your polling station, you must also complete the appropriate form when you do so.
NOTE: Please don’t take your postal vote pack to Shirehall, and please don’t post it through the letterbox of a council building.
Proxy voting
You can have someone you trust vote on your behalf. The deadline for applying for a proxy vote is 5pm on 23 April.
