Title of scheme

Hinstock – 20mph Speed Limit Zone

Description

The introduction of a 20mph speed limit in Hinstock combines the intentions of three projects.  CIL funded proposals to improve pedestrian safety at the Zebra crossing location, support for road safety countermeasures proposed in the DfT Safer Roads Fund project and the findings of Shropshire Councils Schools 20mph study.

The proposals highlight the “village hub” and with the installation of traffic calming measures including a raised table for the Zebra crossing, mini roundabout and approaches in conjunction with an upgrade to the highway lighting to incorporate the whole length of the 20mph zone.

The 20mph length will also encourage compliance to the 30mph speed limit in the remainder of the village.  Separate measures within the 30mph sections of the village will further encourage adherence to the speed limit as street lighting proposals permit.

Documents

Works have started this week to install new street lighting columns for the street lighting upgrade being undertaken as part of the DfT Safer Roads Fund package of works for Hinstock.  The full works also include road safety countermeasures proposed in the DfT project, traffic calming, CIL funded proposals to improve pedestrian safety at the Zebra crossing location and measures influenced by Shropshire Council’s Schools 20mph study. All of these proposals were shared with the public in a consultation exercise undertaken from 25th August to 22nd September 2022.

Further works will complete the street lighting upgrade later in the month along with two phases of carriageway maintenance works and footway works to connect Moat House Gardens with Damson Way will be carried out in the October half term holiday (28 October to 1 November).

The works are being undertaken by Shropshire Council’s term contractor Kier and by National Grid, with additional input from Shropshire’s signals contractor, Swarco. Completion of all works in the village including new signing is intended to be in the School Easter break in April 2025.
