Update: Friday 25 November 2022

The stabilisation works at the B4373 Ironbridge Road, Broseley have been progressing well. Since the implementation of the full road closure on 31 October we have been working closely with all stakeholders, such as Broseley Town Council, traders, local businesses and local residents, to ensure we have kept delays and disruption down to the absolute minimum. With regards to the works the embankment earthworks operations and drainage installation are now 85% and 40% complete respectively. Our contractors are working collaboratively with us and Severn Trent Water to ensure all remaining works are completed by the anticipated completion date of 16 December 2022.

However, this weekend on Saturday 26 November between 3pm and 8pm the High Street will be closed for the annual Christmas lights switch-on spectacular. The closure will be between the junction with Chapel Lane/ Cape Street on the north side and the junction with Delph Side/ Bridgnorth Road/ Church Street on the south side. In addition Fox Lane and Barber Street will be closed to traffic. Whilst these closures are in place the temporary one-way system along Dark Lane, Cockshutt Lane, Barber Street and High Street will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the event. Traffic marshalls will be employed at strategic junctions/points within the Broseley area to control traffic movements and assist motorists.

Through traffic will continue to be diverted via Much Wenlock and Buildwas.

Local traffic cut off by the Ironbridge Road and High Street closures will be able to gain access to Ironbridge and Telford via Dark Lane and Ironbridge Road to the north; and Coalport and Bridgnorth via the B4375 Benthall Lane and B4376 (Barrow) to the south. Take a look at our local diversion route for more information.

Please note that High Street in Ironbridge, Telford will also be closed between 4pm and 9pm on Saturday 26 November for the Ironbridge Christmas lights switch-on, and therefore motorists should expect some delays and are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys. Please take a look at the OneNetwork website for further details on timings and other roadworks in the area.

Finally, we confirm that the normal Arriva bus service will also be disrupted, and routes will be temporarily changed to allow for the closures. For further details please use the Arriva website.

Inevitably there will be some disruption and delays during these works, for which we apologise in advance, and Shropshire Highways would gratefully appreciate your co-operation during the works so that we can be as efficient, and cause as little inconvenience to you, as possible.

The contractor undertaking the work will be Kier, with traffic management support provided by Amberon TM.

Update: 15 December 2022

We're pleased to inform you that works have progressed well during the period of the full road closure which commenced at the end of October. Despite the recent cold spell we've been able to lay the road surfacing this week and intend to paint the road markings tomorrow to allow the road to be opened under traffic light control from Friday 16 December 2022. The one-way system and traffic management signing within the town centre and surrounding roads will be removed at the same time.

Unfortunately, due to the recent cold weather and some delays incurred with some unforeseen ground conditions encountered during the earthworks operations, the road will be reopened under single lane two-way traffic lights to allow outstanding works to be completed between 19 and 23 December 2022, and from 3 to 13 January 2023. The outstanding works, which will be weather dependant, comprise profiling/grading, topsoiling and coir matting to the embankment slopes; installation of fencing along the top of the embankment; and accommodation works within the site. In addition, we'll need to return to site in spring 2023 to grass/wildflower seed the embankment and plant hedges along the top of the highway boundary.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the public and the local community for persevering with us during these essential works, and we apologise for any inconvenience or disruption caused.
