Wyle Cop and English Bridge enhancements - January to March 2018
Work is due to start on Monday 8 January 2018 to upgrade the footways – and resurface the road – between Wyle Cop and English Bridge in Shrewsbury.
The work is due to last approximately nine weeks, and road users are being alerted to some road closures while the work is carried out.
This work is being carried out as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP) and will include the upgrading of footway and kerbing materials with natural stone products, plus carriageway resurfacing. The aim is to enhance and improve the area and complete the new Abbey Foregate ‘gateway’ to the town centre.
Footway re-paving and kerbing
The footway re-paving will be done in two phases. The southern footway (the Lion & Pheasant side) will be carried out in phase 1. The northern section (on the NCP car park side of the road) will be carried out in phase 2.
While the footway re-paving and kerbing work is carried out, the footways will be closed and temporary walkways will be provided for pedestrians. Access will be maintained to businesses and residential properties.
Meanwhile, Wyle Cop will be closed to traffic in a downhill direction (heading out of town) for the duration of the footway and kerbing work, and a signed diversion route will be in place.
Carriageway resurfacing
The resurfacing work will take place overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for five nights – starting on Monday 26 February. During these times Wyle Cop will be closed in both directions and Beeches Lane (Town Walls) will also be closed.
The St Julian’s Crescent one-way system will be reversed, with traffic exiting via Beeches Lane. Access into St Julian’s Crescent will be via English Bridge, and all vehicles will need to wait to be escorted through the closure. A drawing of the proposed footway and carriageway work give more detail.

Pride Hill upgrade – 30 April to November 2018, and February to spring 2019
Work will include:
- Resurfacing the pedestrianised area with high-quality materials to reinforce the character of the street;
- Replacing existing street furniture to reflect the proposed high quality finish;
- Reducing street clutter;
- Improving pedestrian connections at either end of the street;
- Emphasising key access points with the street with the use of informal banding;
- Enhancing the setting of High Cross; and
- Retaining the existing trees.
Access to properties will be maintained at all times, with temporary pedestrian walkways being implemented where required. The contractor will have pedestrian ambassadors and a public liaison officer on-site to assist with enquiries and access arrangements for deliveries during the construction works.

Update: December 2018
Work to upgrade and enhance Pride Hill will re-start early next year, following the Christmas and new year break. The work is planned to begin again on 4 February 2019, with an anticipated completion date of spring 2019.
Unfortunately, the delivery of the scheme this year was not what Shropshire Council expected and, as a result, the council will not be proceeding with the previous contractor. However, we’re pleased to announce the appointment of a new contractor, McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd. Their locality and previous experience will allow the successful delivery and completion of the works, to the required and expected standard.
We’ll soon be recommencing our formal consultation with Shrewsbury BID, Shrewsbury Town Council, other key stakeholders and businesses, in order to successfully complete the scheme with the least amount of disruption possible.
Update: January 2019
Castle Street and St Mary’s Street resurfacing – August 2018
Castle Street and St Mary’s Street in Shrewsbury will be closed overnight (from 8pm to 6am) from Tuesday 14 August 2018 for resurfacing work. It’s estimated that the works will take three nights to complete. The work is being carried out as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP).
While work is carried out the road will be closed from Castle Gates at the junction with Smithfield Road, with a signed diversion route in place.
During the road closure access will be maintained to residents and businesses only. An access route will be provided via Windsor Place, with the one-way being reversed.
The work is weather dependent and may be subject to unforeseen delay and date changes.
As usual with works of this nature there will be disruption whilst the works are undertaken, but every effort will be made to keep any disruption and noise to a minimum. We thank people for their understanding.
Town Walls to Claremont Bank improvements
The above scheme will commence on 10 September 2018, and be carried out in three separate phases. The first phase - Murivance and adjoining roads – will end in November 2018.
Work will recommence concurrently in early January on phase 2 - Claremont Bank, and phase 3 - Town Walls - with completion anticipated in spring 2019.
The work will include: the upgrading of footway materials to improve the aesthetic appearance of the area; improvements to footway crossing facilities along the whole route; and improved road layout and parking. Each of the phases will include carriageway resurfacing.
During the work there will be several traffic management phases implemented, in order to accommodate the safe construction of these works for the travelling public, and the contractors’ workforce. The road will remain open for the main part of the works with lane closures and temporary traffic signals in operation. The carriageway resurfacing works will be undertaken under a full closure at the end of each phase.
You can view the traffic management plan for Murivance here, and more information will be provided on variable messaging signage throughout the period of the works.
It should be noted that this work is weather dependent and part of a larger overall programme which may be subject to unforeseen delays.

Town Walls to Claremont Bank update - 23 April 2019
One of the final stages of the Town Walls to Claremont Bank work is the resurfacing of the road. This work will take place between 22 April and 5 May 2019 and will require the roads to be fully closed to traffic so that work can be carried out safely.
As with previous closures, the road will be closed from Beeches Lane (Town Walls) at its junction with Williams Way, with diversions routes in place. Traffic management operatives will be stationed at each closure point to allow access for residents and businesses only.
In addition, from the week commencing 15 April there will be some short-term closures to allow new streetlighting and kerbing to be installed within narrow areas on Claremont Bank. These closures are only expected to last during daytime working hours.
Once the resurfacing work is complete, the final paving will be completed on the new footpaths, with works anticipated to be fully complete by mid-May 2019.
