Sir John Talbot's School, Whitchurch

During preliminary works, traffic surveys were undertaken for a duration of one week to obtain the average vehicle speeds outside school sites at peak times. Given the nature of the roads surrounding Sir John Talbot’s School, different approaches were required to reduce vehicle speeds, these are outlined below.

B5395 Prees Road

20MPH road signData gathered during this exercise, when considered with the site location and traffic characteristics, determined that an appropriate method of controlling and reducing vehicle speeds outside of the school facilities would be the installation of a 20mph speed limit that is live 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This would be implemented on site through the installation of ‘20’ terminal signs, as shown here, potentially with supporting ‘20’ roundels marked on the carriageway. As part of the wider scheme streetlighting levels will also be evaluated, with upgrades and vegetation clearance undertaken where necessary.

B5476 Tilstock Road

20MPH road signageThe above solution wasn't deemed to be suitable for all of the sites surrounding the school, when road and traffic characteristics were considered.

The appropriate method of controlling and reducing vehicle speeds outside of the other school facilities was deemed to be the installation of a 20mph speed limit that is active during school peak times.

It's yet to be determined which specific signs will be used, however a potential signage solution is shown here. As part of the wider scheme streetlighting levels will also be evaluated, with upgrades and vegetation clearance undertaken where necessary.
