Closure details

  • Starts: 29 January 2024
  • Ends: 5 April 2024
  • Running: 24 hours
  • Central Shropshire

Essential strengthening works are to be undertaken to Cressage Bridge. The work will involve removing the existing carriageway and deck, and replacing with a new concrete deck, waterproofing, kerbing and surfacing to the structure.

To complete this scheme, it will be necessary to close the B4380 24 hours a day, seven days a week, between the A458 and Eaton Constantine Junction, to all vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Access to frontages will be maintained up to the bridge closure for the duration of the works.

A signed diversion for vehicles will be provided via the A458 to Shrewsbury, B4380 Thieves Lane to Atcham, B4380 Ironbridge Road (to Eaton Constantine).

The contractor for the works is our term maintenance contractor Kier, with supervision by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.

Inevitably there may be some disruption during these works, for which we apologise in advance. Shropshire Highways gratefully appreciates your co-operation during the works. If you have any queries during the works, please contact Shropshire Council Highways Customer Services Centre on 0345 678 9006.

The above dates may change subject to constraints such as weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Update - 12 March

The works to Cressage Bridge on the B4380, which were due to be completed on Friday 5 April are ahead of schedule and due to be completed on Tuesday 12 March 2024. The B4380 between Cressage and Eaton Constantine is planned to be reopened at 5pm on Tuesday 12 March.

The works consisting of void infill to the bridge, carriageway refurbishment and kerbing are ahead of schedule due to a combination of design and programme updates, with collaboration between the Shropshire Highways team of Shropshire Council, WSP and Kier.

It should be noted that the bridge will be shut again for one day on Friday 5 April 2024 to allow a routine inspection to be carried out.

This inspection was originally programmed to take place on the final day of the main works, requiring specialist access equipment, of which there are currently only two units in the country. Due to limited availability and the need to use this unit for multiple inspections in the county, also requiring road closures, the date of the inspection can't be brought forward.

Shropshire Highways thanks you for your co-operation and understanding during the works. If you have any queries, please contact Shropshire Council Highways Customer Services Centre on 0345 678 9006.
